US President: A Woman, An Indian-American?
The world waits to see the first woman
as ‘the most powerful person’ – the US President – in 2020. Will it be an
Indian origin American – Tulsi Gabbard or Kamala Harris (minus Nikki Haley)? The
question still possesses a challenge to the idea that a woman can win the US
presidential election. Juxtapose, the campaign bugle has been sounded and the countdown
to the White House has begun….
The US
presidential election year – 2020 – marks a history in the making to see a change that a woman can be the US President, as
six women are running for the post. For years, there have been conflicting debates and
questions frequently raised, whether a woman can win. However, the 2016
election manifested a different narrative and confidence among the voters, thanks to Hillary Clinton for demystify the idea of a female
president and breaking the dominant mindset that woman can’t be a force
to reckon in politics and be the US President.

Echoes of women
candidates’ campaigns and debates, including Indian origin Americans Tulsi
Gabbard and Kamala Harris are taking center stage leaving no doubts that they
are in the race to win. It would be an era-changing moment if either of the two
wins to become the first woman US President. One can only think of what would
the changed scenario in the Indo-US relations, global geopolitics, world trade
relations, peace and international affairs with a woman as the head of the most
powerful nation – a better world.
Changing ideas and beliefs of the voters have been
found by recent polls and surveys that say that they are comfortable with a
female president or would pick a woman as the US President. Countries across
the world – Sri Lanka, India, UK, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Republic of China, Germany,
Liberia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, South Korea, etc – have/had woman as the
heads of the nation.
It’s time to find answer to the question? Why has it taken the US so
long to get a woman President?
